The Trinity
1.1 The Trinity
What is it? Christians believe there is one God, but he exists in three ‘persons’. Each ‘person’ is different and each ‘person’ is fully God. 1. God the Father 2. God the Son 3. God the Holy Spirit The Nicene Creed tells us that: God the Father is… Creator of the universe ‘Almighty’ (has complete power) God the Son is… Jesus Christ who is ‘Lord’ The Son of the Father God the Holy Spirit is… From the Father and Son The ‘giver of life’ (which means he helps believers to know God and worship him) The Persons of the Trinity at Jesus’ Baptism (Matthew 3:16-17) When Jesus was baptised the heavens opened and ‘he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove…. a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” Here the Trinity works as one: Jesus is baptised to begin his ministry (his teaching) The Father speaks his approval. The Holy Spirit, with the power of the Father, enables Jesus to begin his work. How is the Trinity reflected in worship and belief today? Person in the Trinity Christians believe that… God the Father He is creator and cares for his creation. He is powerful, so they pray to him. Jesus showed them how to pray to him in the Lord’s Prayer “Our Father in heaven, holy be your name…” God the Son Around 5BC God the Son became a human being called Jesus. Jesus is a role model to follow. Jesus died to save their sins. Worship of Jesus is joyful and thankful because he died to save their sins. God the Holy Spirit Comforter and guide. Lives in their hearts and helps make correct moral choices. Helps them worship God. Charismatic churches ask the Holy Spirit to enable them to worship with spiritual gifts e.g. dancing, speaking in tongues. The Trinity is a model of mutual love and perfect unity. Christians believe the Trinity is a loving relationship with each of the three persons relating to the others – just like a family. Christians are baptised ‘in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’. (Matthew 28:19) Christians sometimes sing about the Trinity in hymns: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty […]God in three persons, blessed Trinity!” Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
